We first published this news (via HT), on 3rd March that announced that Delhi parents are reaching out to Gurugram schools for admissions as Nursery Admissions in Delhi continues to haunt poor parents that are once again left clueless, and looking for answers to same age old questions once again.

HERE IS THE INSIDE STORY!

Many parents have started blocking seats in NCR schools as there is lot of misleading information being provided on many leading online forums/sites creating panic situation and these sites are actually promoting some leading schools (so called international schools, full A/C schools, hat-ke schools etc - you know what I mean here), as a result they are creating panic so that they can sell seats in those schools in Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and specially parents that are ready to shell out money as that puts them in more comfortable position by securing seats but hardly helpful.

It is all about money, a nexus and nursery admissions mafia in making :)

Many online sites and forums are misleading parents by re-publishing information that contradicts with reality on ground, and with parents locked in three way battle among - Schools <> DOE/Govt <> Court - these forums are doing further damage by confusing parents, and diverting them to NCR schools that are always on hunt for upper middle or higher class parents that are always on hunt for comfort zone.

It is pain but parents are advised to rather look for information with schools (the best source actually), as many online forums have incomplete, outdated information. Media hardly validates information themselves and falls pray to these fake admissions gurus assuming they know it all - they are actually in the hands of nexus, who is diverting their attention and actually multiplying panic their benefit.

We are getting requests from many parents to request fellow parents to please submit the withdrawal application (follow the applicable withdrawal procedure) at school as soon as possible so that other parents and their kids can get the seat.

Although the "un-confirmed" seats would be released by the cut-off date in coming weeks but an early release would help other parents who did not get a single seat anywhere yet. 

You have nothing to lose but your withdrawal at early stage would be timely help for all other parents.

If you have released, or wish to release any extra seats in any school, please do share the school name if possible (do NOT share child/parent details, or names please), so that others can see some ray of hope!

Schools to release second list of candidates on March 17 - Nursery Admissions Delhi 2017-18

Private unaided schools in the national capital released their first list for nursery admission on Tuesday.

Schools said they have released the first list and parents can come to school for document verification and admission.

Many parents, however, said they have not been able to make it to the list of any school. Parents, many of whom had applied to multiple schools, lamented the lack of uniform criteria.

“My child’s name has not come in even a single school out of the 12 that I have checked today. Every school has a different set of criteria. While some are keeping neighbourhood at 0-1 kms, others have 0-6 kms. Schools have different points for sibling and alumni,” said Sumit Malhotra, a resident of Dwarka.

Parents already know the details of the points their children have received since schools have uploaded the details on their websites. The Delhi government had directed the schools to upload the list of students who had applied and the points they got.

For admission to nursery classes, children are given points on the basis of criteria such as distance, sibling, alumni and others. In schools, where more than one child received the same score, draw of lots will be held.

Schools in which seats are left vacant after completing the process, a second list will be released on March 17.

This is only for the general category seats and not for the 25% seats meant for the Economically Weaker Section/Disadvantaged (EWS/DG) category. The admission to this category is centralised and is conducted by the government. The application process for the students in this category is over.

Officials said the list for EWS admission will come out in the next week. “Hopefully by next week we will conduct the draw of lots and list of students will be out,” an official said.

First Lists Out - Goof-ups, Disappointment and Some luck!

Latest on First List for Nursery Admissions 2017-2018: 

The first list has been published yesterday in schools across Delhi (non-govt schools only), and while some parents see their ward making it to the first list others left puzzled as there are reports of goof-ups in some schools (could be human errors) so parents hope that schools will take corrective steps, many left disappointed as they ward did not make it to the first list.

Many are celebrating big! How?
Several parents are on cloud nine as they could made it to multiple schools in their neighborhood sheer luck - may be. But that suggests that they are going to vacate at least 1 or more seats that will help others wards make it to second list. So such parents can please help others by taking a call quickly, and release other seats. (not hoping that many would do that as we all humans have tendency to hold on to things....don't we?) BREAKING!! Neighbourhood Criteria Scrapped for 298 Delhi Schools on Govt Land

HC judgment was due on 14th Feb is finally out and after a series of ups and downs on selection criteria for Nursery Admissions 2017-2018 session for 298 schools built on govt land in Delhi, finally HC has ruled that neighborhood criteria can not be FORCED onto these schools.

Delhi govt issued a notice that schools built on govt land must follow the special selection criteria, that mandated 75 seats to be filled with kids from neighborhood (i.e making distance as main criteria for selection. HC stayed the order mid of January, adding the chaos, and poor schools had started publishing their selection criteria and points breakup on DOE website, further leading to confusion.

In short -

• Schools are free to setup their own selection criteria from the list of approved ones (that actually covers all that you can think of), but here is the favorite criteria that schools are expected to pick from,  
• While schools will continue to use distance as main criteria, expect the points to be dropped for distance and other standard criteria will get their place and slice
• Schools will probably update the revised criteria and points on DOE site, but given that there is not much time left, so they may be updating it on their website, and at school notice boards. We shall try and update the database as soon as it is made available, here you can refer and search schools and their criteria and points as it stands today.

Nursery Admissions: 10 questions every parent must ask - hold on!

While trying to understand what options we as parents get when we go out hunting for schools, I came across this article on Rediff that is so impractical that I was encouraged to write this post to give a clear and more practical approach to this million dollar question - "what questions every parent must ask?"

First of all - if you have ever been to a school for admissions - ask YOURSELF this question - are you given the choice or time to ask questions back to school? The 99% of us would answer this question with one word "No", what we are given usually left with is few minutes of time to scan through the list of to-dos or checklists that we need to fulfill in order to get our ward into that school; Or some of the 'branded' schools will handover a nicely done 'sales brochure' and we take that home hoping that this booklet will have answer to all our questions - but seldom thats true; and I am talking about any and all schools across India - you know of any exceptions? Most welcome - feel free to drop a note and I shall cover and highlight them on my portal and blog - they deserve to be appreciated - isn't it?

So the question of what to ask is hardly practical in today's scenario (realistically), so what I as parent myself and having over 8 years of close experience in Nursery Admissions and related issues and challenges, I can tell you that there is no way you get opportunity to ask questions. Specially in metro cities!

Rather, we as parent need to act more intelligently, do research of our own,
1) explore offline feedback from parents of existing students from same school, or
2) check for online reviews at sites like SchoolsWeLike.com or Google Plus profile page of that school for community reviews, or
3) check school sites, brouchers, past performance history etc if you can get handle to it, and
4) Discuss and get involved with other parents on community forums like one here

I don't think a school admin staff will ever give you enough time or opportunity to ask questions like the author has listed in his article.

Question many parents have been asking...and noone has answer!

Father of a girl child came with this analysis and I thought it would be useful to share with you all, he writes:

While my daughter has got admission in school of choice I guess I was lucky and I feel for the others who haven’t been so lucky. One particular thing that draws my attention is that while all the schools came out with the first list adhering to the points system, there hasn’t been any such second or third list of any significance.

Without naming the schools if we grade 4 schools as : A , B, C, D

And assume that all these schools are in the same vicinity ( say within a range of 8 -10 kms) it is obvious that a child getting admission in A,B and/or C will surely get admitted in A.

I have done a study of such schools out of sheer curiosity and found that the number of such overlapping seats would be around 15-20 whereas they have admitted only 7-8 from the second list.

Actually second lists were announced after the fee submission dates of A and B was over. Both A&B had fee submissions dates more or less overlapping each other.

So where does those seats go???

Letter to Apeejay schools and their reposnse on selection criteria

Note: Entire conversation has been added now, last updated on January 28th, 2008

There was some confusion and doubt in parents mind related to selection list of Apeejay schools. As we could not get much details on issues reported by parents so we send a mail to school principals (Saket, Sheikh Sarai and Pitam Pura) and in response to our e-mail (Dated: January 25, 2008) that we had sent on behalf of all parents, we have received response from Mr. Aditya Berlia (head of ASERF - Apeejay Education Research Foundation) clarifying the doubts that were raised by parents through this blog.

Here is the abstract of this e-conversation:

We asked them to give clarification regarding nursery shortlisting which took place on 24th Jan 2008 across Apeejay schools in Delhi. The issues we highlighted included:
1) Since from the lists it was not clear as to what was the basis of shortlisting. So we asked them to help us understand the exact criteria that schools have followed.
2) As we all had observed that there are kids who scored higher points (for example 50, 54, 58 etc.) and they have not made it to the list but kids with less points (for example 40, 45, 50) have been selected. We asked them to give explanation of the same.

In his response (Dated: January 26, 2008) Mr Aditya mentioned that Apeejay Education Research Foundation has designed “representative affirmative action” system for the nursery admission and details can be found at research foundation website http://admissions.apeejay.edu/
Mr Aditya also mentioned that “system is new and some of the factors are hard to explain; we certainly could do a better job in this regard. I am sure however you will appreciate the manner in which we have conducted the admissions this year; we are certainly quite proud of it.”

Giving due respect to Mr. Aditya’s explanation we spent good time understanding the system process from website, and it was clear that the school had prepared 11 lists (by segments) and selected top scoring kids from each of these lists. So it is also clear that every list will have its own cutoff and hence a kid with 50 points (from “engineering segment”) might have failed but a kid with 35 points (from “media segment”) has made it to the selection list.

We don’t see any rule violation here, except that the school has not made the complete list available to public, so we have sent another mail (Dated: January 26th 2008) to Mr. Aditya asking school to publish the complete list so that we can check if this “system” has really been followed.

Updates received on January 28, 2008:
We have received response from Mr. Aditya today and in his response he mentioned that “With regards to publishing the names and numbers we had decided not to do it online to protect the privacy of the parents. Since the marks given be broken up to reveal confidential information about the parents' qualification and work background, as well as allow anyone to find out the status of someone else's admission, we wish to err on the side of caution in this regard. In this day and age when the privacy of individuals both online and offline are been regularly compromised we felt ethically obliged not to reveal this information online.”

He also added that “Next year we plan to implement a more stringent security system with a username / password aspect; along with a more secure server (better programming as pointed out by you is also needed). The lists were put on the notice board of the school for local consumption. Certainly we have learned a lot from the process this year (we received around 6700 applications for 300 seats), and try for more disclosure next year, perhaps putting in a place a system where marks are given immediately at the point of application.”
